David Beckham's MLS plans gain momentum

David Beckham's plans to start a new MLS franchise have progressed after the Miami county commissioners voted unanimously in favour for a new stadium to be built in the city, according to ESPN.

The new stadium will be privately funded, but as yet the exact location for the stadium has not been identified.

Concerns have previously been raised over one of the potential sites that is seen to be the favourite.

The site will be close to the Miami Heat basketball franchise as well as the Miami beach hotel district, which commissioners do not want to be disrupted because of the finances it brings to the city.

The land is also owned by Port Miami, which means that this has the potential for cargo ships and cruises to mix with fans.

As well as the current back to back NBA champions the city does boast other major professional franchises.

The Miami Dolphins is the city's NFL franchise, and they've won the Superbowl twice and currently sit 2nd in the AFC East behind the New England Patriots.

The cities baseball side is the Miami Marlins who finished bottom of the National League east Division last season.

Finally Florida's Ice hockey team bases itself in the state capital but, like the baseball side, failed to make it out of their regional group.

David Beckham sets the Goldenballs standard in male grooming

David Beckham sets the Goldenballs standard in male grooming

David Beckham is the only man who should be allowed to dabble with make-up

LADIES, when you slope off to the work loos to put your face on ahead of the office Christmas party, check out whether your male colleagues are sneaking off to powder their noses too.

More than a decade since the birth of the "metrosexual male" and the men's grooming market is exploding. Not only are guys now comfortable with moisturiser but they now know their scrubs from their serums and have learned the magic of make-up and are not afraid to use it... a little bit.

According to new research by Debenhams (just in time for your Christmas shopping no less) one in 10 men admit they will wear some subtle make-up this festive season with a third planning to slap on a bit of fake tan. If you work with a lot of thirtysomething men then you should definitely be on the look out for the old guyliner because it is this age group that is most image conscious.

Debenhams claims these chaps are splashing out as much as £100 a month on anti-ageing creams, cosmetics and spa trips and that these uber-groomed guys spend more on maintaining (or achieving) their good looks than men in their twenties and their fifties - I'm guessing Simon Cowell didn't take part in Debenhams' survey...

And men don't mess about when it comes to their faces, forking out on average £50 for their moisturiser whereas women spend just £11.12. No wonder the male grooming market is said to be worth a whopping £600m.

As ever we don't have to look far to see who is driving this trend. It is of course old Goldenballs himself, David Beckham. The former footballer and global fashion icon was cited as the number one grooming inspiration by men in their thirties with many admitting they were more likely to buy a product if the father-of-four endorsed it.

In a world where image is everything it is hardly surprising that more and more men are feeling the pressure to look good at all times. And to look young.

The recent recession saw a spike in the number of older men having cosmetic treatments like fillers and Botox because they feared their age worked against them when competing for jobs. And, with men's men like Clive Owen (Lancome) and Hugh Laurie (L'Oreal) happy to endorse blokes' skincare ranges, there is no longer any stigma attached to fellas taking care of their faces.

The Debenhams survey also revealed that northern men are the most concerned with looking good at the Christmas party with Newcastle's males spending the most money and Liverpool and Manchester not far behind.

I am not remotely surprised by the findings of this research. I am married to a man as attached to his Clinique M Lotion as he is to me and he is living proof of the benefits of a good face cream. I also have no problem with blokes sneaking a bit of concealer to disguise the odd blemish. But I draw the line at men wearing fake tan and foundation.

Not unless they can blend it like Beckham that is.

Why we really should draw the line at blokes in make-up

Fans queue over night for David Beckham's West End book signing

People camped out overnight to meet the former footballer, and some were in for disappointment as only the first 500 in the queue were guaranteed to meet him.

Two hours before the doors were due to open, more than 700 people were already in line.

Retired teacher Helen Steck, 69, was so keen to meet him she flew in from Hamburg and booked a room at the Cavendish Hotel, yards away from the Waterstones' book signing in Piccadilly.

"It sounds extreme but I've been a fan since the Manchester United days and thought this was an amazing opportunity that won't come around very often in life. We're allowed two books so am going to get one each signed for my sons, who are in their thirties, for Christmas," she said.

Poppy Mason-Taylor, 22, who came prepared with blankets and a hot water bottle, said: "I wanted to be nice and cosy because I knew I'd be queuing for hours. I just had to meet David, he's the whole package - a great personality, stylish, a family man, a celebrity."

The self-titled autobiography contains never-before-seen photographs but accordingy to thebookseller.com, it has sold 27,000 copies since publication on October 31.

The memoir of his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has sold 568,000 copies since October 24.

Dan Gregory, 29, was queuing to meet Beckham to even the score with his boyfriend, who has met the ex-England captain five times.

Mr Gregory said: "My partner works in Harrods and he and my friends are always saying I'll never get to meet David Beckham, so I had to come here. Beckham is a gay icon, a style icon, a sporting icon - everything he touches turns to gold."

The Geddes family of six had travelled through the night from Weston-Super-Mare for the chance to meet their "sporting hero".

After getting her book signed, Katie Semler said: "I feel all floaty and excited, I still have butterflies to be honest. He's so good looking in real life and so nice. I'm completely flying."

David Beckham Gets Rather Emotional Watching 'Armageddon' and 'Friends'

You would never accuse Armageddon and Friends of having much in common other than they both are excellent drains of your time. Oh, and they also turn David Beckham into a mess of human emotions.

Thanks to For the Win's Nick Schwartz, we have video proof that the former football star is just like us, minus the obvious discrepancy in bank account and fame.

We take you to the seven-minute mark of the video.

Beckham is speaking with BBC Radio 1's Nick about the brand new The Class of 92, which came to DVD earlier this month.

Here is a trailer of the documentary:

He had just admitted that things became rather emotional when he reunited with his former teammates, something we may have guessed considering the impact that team had.

The interview also features discussion on Beckham's youth and his move back to London. It's all there if you want to comb through the video, but the truly important part is how emotional this former footballer can become and the kind of entertainment that garners the tears.

Beckham states, "I'm kind of an emotional wreck in movies; I can't get through some movies without shedding a tear. I can't lie."

Now offers the comedic suggestion of Aladdin, to which Beckham continues with a smile, " Armageddon."

To which we say:

If you don't ball up into a human cocoon of emotional effluence when Harry Stamper says his goodbyes, well, I don't know how to help you feel.

Beckham continues, "I'm the same when I'm watching The Office, or when I'm watching Friends."

As for this particular film, Beckham admits he did get a little choked up. I guess it doesn't pack the wallop that comes with Chandler walking in to find Monica surrounded by candles and... I can't continue or I'll break down in tears.

I now have the urge to watch Marley and Me with Becks, because movie night with his legend is sure to run the spectrum of human emotions.

Beckham's search for Miami soccer stadium approved

Credit: Reuters/Lucy Nicholson

Soccer star David Beckham (L) and his son Brooklyn watch the Los Angeles Lakers play the Miami Heat in their NBA basketball game in Los Angeles, California March 4, 2012.

The vote by Miami-Dade county commissioners was the first test of political support for Beckham's soccer venture in Miami. The decision gave county officials authority to identify stadium sites and negotiate construction contracts with developers.

MLS, the top U.S. professional soccer league, has stressed the importance of having a final stadium deal, along with a business plan, before it will approve a new team.

"We can't go to Miami without the right stadium solution," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said during his state of the league address ahead of the MLS Cup final in Kansas City in early December. "David understands that, the city understands that, that is an indisputable fact," he said.

The former England team captain, who also played for the Los Angeles Galaxy, retired as a player in May but is seeking to exercise a $25 million option in his MLS contract to start a new franchise.

County officials say Beckham is interested in an urban setting near Miami's downtown, possibly on publicly owned land next to the port of Miami's cruise ship terminals, hoping the stadium would become part of Miami's tourism landscape.

Beckham's group is not looking for public financing, but may need to negotiate site plans with the county, such as leasing the port location, to help build a privately financed stadium.

Tuesday's vote was "a very positive step to bringing the world's most popular game to Miami," said a spokesman for the Beckham ownership group.

The group was "exploring various sites in downtown Miami," he said, and did not have a timetable yet for when it might be ready to make a formal proposal to MLS.

"We're almost there," Beckham told the BBC in an interview in late November.

"We greatly appreciate the support shown by the Miami-Dade County Commission and look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Carlos Gimenez, the Commission and David Beckham on finalizing a plan for a new MLS stadium in Miami," MLS Commissioner Don Garber, said in a statement.

Beckham has toured Miami twice in recent months with British businessman and American Idol creator Simon Fuller, as well as Bolivian-born billionaire Marcelo Claure, founder of Miami-based Brightstar Corp, the world's largest wireless distributor and the provider of global services to Apple.

Beckham earlier this month registered as a Florida company under the name Miami Beckham United LLC and has hired HR&A Advisors, a New York-based development consulting firm, to examine possible stadium locations in Miami, along with Miami's top architecture firm, Arquitectonica.

Beckham is eying a prominent, 25-acre plot of county-owned land next to Miami's cruise ship terminals, on a spit of land facing the city's downtown waterfront.

The port site is in walking distance from the Miami Heat's basketball arena, and is also within easy reach of the Miami Beach hotel district.

The port has been looking to develop the prime site with a shopping mall, hotel and office complex, as well a yacht marina, but some county commissioners questioned whether a stadium was appropriate.

"I don't see the relationship of a soccer stadium with the big boats and the big cargo coming from Panama," said county commission chairwoman, Rebeca Sosa, noting the port's preparations to handle larger ships using the Panama Canal which is undergoing a massive expansion.
