Ellie Simmonds and David Beckham with 5th Bexleyheath Beavers and Scout Group

A Bexley beaver and scout group met David Beckham and quadruple gold Paralympian Ellie Simmonds to celebrate their efforts in the Sainsbury's Active Kids Challenge.

Bexley contributed £859,514 worth of equipment to sports clubs, schools and nurseries as part of the challenge.

Five children won the chance to meet the initiative's ambassadors Beckham and Simmonds in London on October 4.

The former England football captain said: "It was brilliant to meet the children from 5th Bexleyheath Beavers and Scout Group and to see so many young people genuinely inspired to get involved in sport and activity following last summer.

"I'm passionate about inspiring kids to try a new sport and that's exactly what Active Kids is all about - encouraging kids to try, and hopefully really enjoy, something new."

The children won the opportunity after they completed all 24 activities in the challenge, which were focused around game, skill, food and a special David Beckham 1 Minute Challenge.

Jackie Hall, Beaver Scout Leader for the 5th Bexleyheath Beavers and Scout group said for the children it was a memorable experience.

She said:"It was an amazing day for the children to meet David and Ellie - two sporting icons who they all look up to.

"The children really learnt a lot and it's certainly an experience we'll never forget".

On the day, David and Ellie took part in a number of activities at Lee Valley Athletics Centre with 170 children across the country, including the scout group.

"We had great fun taking part in the Active Kids Challenge earlier this year and it was really inspiring to see David and Ellie in action," added the scout leader.
